Evoking dreams and connecting with early memories, Chie Fueki and Joshua Marsh each make works on paper that allow seeing to emerge from the process of engaging with materials, as opposed to empirical observation. Both Fueki and Marsh’s works were made primarily at the Koganecho artist residency in Yokohama Japan, where they had neighboring studios during spring of ‘23. Fueki’s colorful works revolve around the cherry blossoms lining the Ōoka River, passing near the residency studios and stretching by the train station where she was born one stop away. The shimmering surfaces of these folded paper “quilts” and mixed media drawings construct an equivalence of the blossoms in Yokohama she heard stories of while growing up in Brazil, in bloom when she was brought home from the hospital at birth. Marsh’s graphite drawings unfold through a searching touch of pencil point to paper, channeling the atmosphere of a specific stream in Pennsylvania he often walked to during childhood. Each drawing emerges as a new formation of the place’s vocabulary of flows, growth and deterioration, dreamt into being without describing states of affairs as strictly remembered.
